This a welcoming
welcome to my website; Me name is Marina Megally and I am a Senior at CUNY. this website is dedicated to discussion the work I have completed for the writing for the sciences course. Below is the self-assessment that I have written that discusses my expectations of the class.
The writing for the science class was very interesting and captivating to me. I had no idea what to expect or how to learn at first. I want to do something in the medical field. I think combining English and science is very creative for me, so it helps me engage more deeply and think more critically. I felt that has increased enormously and has shown me that I can do it if I do my best and use all my intellect to do it. Overall, the things that we did in the class, such as reading, writing, and using library research while synthesizing, literature review, and analyzing essays, all of those were effective in my writing. scientific articles and probably assisted me in discovering a way to craft a scientific article. Strangely, this class gave me much more and challenged me to analyze my writing style and what topics I enjoyed writing about the most. Now I feel comfortable when I start analyzing specific articles in order.
I think overall, within myself, I perceive things differently and see the world through different lenses. So this course helped me to think more critically. The assignments in class and the response assignments, I think, help me develop my rhetorical sensibility along with just understanding that.I believe that before this course, I was really struggling with set goals when it came to writing essays, which is why I struggled to deliver them on time. Also, I was scared of this course because I hadn’t taken any writing courses for a long time before this class and because English is my second language. However, I discovered that I am comfortable in the realm of academic writing because of the clear instructions the professor has given us. Actually, the professor helped me a lot to do well in this course with his instructions and teaching. My reading skills have also improved by the class reading level, in the sense that I have gotten better at reading scientific things with the specific science language. Over this semester, I have connected work to my own life and experiences for the writing assignments, and I found it helped me write a lot and in-depth because it allowed me to relate my writing back to my
personal life. For example, in my first brainstorm, I discussed how many families suffer from cancer disease, and I wrote it in class on the first day of classes.
Then I wrote about mental health evolution. That was the second essay in this course. That is what that assignment was all about: using the CCNY resources to find peer-reviewed articles to use in the literature review. I used to struggle to find what I needed because I was not in the class when my friends went to the library, but I do not have that problem anymore after the professor showed me how to do it. I am thankful that he helped me out with that. I think my biggest issue with writing was synthesizing information and repeating myself, but now I really feel like thanks to the assignments from this semester I was genuinely able to work on that. Everything else, I feel like I was already really good at and did not need to improve on.It was not an easy semester for me as I took a lot of classes virtually because I didn’t feel well. Fortunately, the professor recognized my fatigue and assisted me in keeping up in class. He helps me out whenever I have a question for him. THanks for the great semeseter.I liked The Mental Life of Plants and Worms “Darwin’s Last Book Discussesthe habits of worms and their ability to cultivate the earth’s soil, modify its face, and reflex. Worms can sense and differentiate between darkness and light through some nerve cells that exist in their heads and transmit sensations and vibrations to them. The ability of worms to adapt their responses to the environment suggests that there is spirit and intelligence within them.”
Last assignment is ” Living like Weasels” by Annie Dillard is a well-composed essay that describes her story when she encountered the weasel. A solid state of admiration is developed when she met with a weasel and got familiarized with their way of life. Weasels did not live either with choice and motivations but rather with an extreme level of purity. Annie Dillard
thought that life should be spent free and careless with any tension or other bitter realities of this world.
Finally, I want to say taking course ENG 21003: Writing for Sciences has taught me new things that I have not done in any of my other classes. My writing abilities were poor. However, the increasing complexity of the writing different assay helped me to enhance my writing with each paper. I learned a lot of new material that I previously had no knowledge of. I learned and filed the skills of writing a summary and conducting research, as well as rhetorical analysis, a literature review, and a public awareness campaign. I was not unacquainted with annotating or writing a reverse outline. I didn’t write an analysis essay and was unaware of how to write an annotated literature review or a public awareness campaign. As a result, most of what I learned in this course was new to me, such as writing for a formal audience, practicing analysis through the reverse outline, and summarizing. In this class, I learned grammar rules, critical thinking, analysis skills, brainstorming, collecting information, analyzing different perspectives, developing and elaborating my ideas, and organizing the content. I also revise, peer-review my peers’ assignments, respond to peers’ feedback, and improve my writing skills. In general, I have improved in my writing ability, and I will definitely continue to grow and work on it more. Thank you for an amazing semester.
I found that I can write an analysis essay. I just want to think and analyze critically. I discovered that I have good analytical abilities that have developed from the work I did in this course by reading and thinking. To be honest, I was scared of this course in the beginning, but by the clear outline, I made it. I am grateful that the professor’s clear instructions made me feel at ease in the realm of academic writing. Actually, the professor helped me loads to do nicely on this course
with his instructions and teaching. Learning how to use a research matrix and annotated synthesizing helped me too much in making my literature review easy. I think I am good with what I have learned and I have mastered the concepts that I have learned in this course. However, I think I want to work more on writing a literature review. The instructions made everything easy for us. To continue my growth, I should: observe the instructor’s commands and feedback; be on time; care more about the matters that I am learning; do my assignments on time; and work hard. I think that the skills and the material that I have learned on this site will benefit a lot in undertaking studies that I will conduct in medical school. Think critically, think beyond my readings and what I see. I will notice my run-on and fragmented sentences in my upcoming writing. I am applying the things I learned on this course. I am using grammar rules, critical questioning, analysis skills, brainstorming, collecting information, organizing my ideas, synthesizing research, using transitional phrases, revising, peer-reviewing my peers’ assignments, responding The work wasn’t that tough due to the fact that the professor supplied each lesson to follow and have the desired grade, and he provided help and was very caring about his students. To move forward, I should work harder and follow the commands given to us.
